We stay in Mabul Backpackers because they offered a very good value accommodation and diving package and we ended up quite happy with the place. How to get to to Semporna
The usual and quick way to get to Semporna is fly to Tawau airport, which is well connected with Kuala Lumpur thanks to daily low-cost flights from €20.

Once at Tawau airport to Semporna it takes 1 hour and they depart private buses with a price of around €5 per person. You can also ask your accommodation in Semporna to arrange airport pickup, who will either send a local taxi driver or reserve a place for you on these buses at a similar cost.
If you are already in Borneo to get to Semporna you can do it by bus from Sandakan or with private driver from Kinabatangan River.

Where to stay in Semporna
Backpacker hostel: Perfect Hub It is a small hotel located in the interior of Semporna, very comfortable and quite clean.. It has a common area where you can make coffee or tea. In the surrounding area there are many cheap restaurants where you can eat.

What to know before travel to Semporna
Best time
The best time to visit Semporna and the island of Borneo in general is during the dry season that runs from March to October. Also, as there is less rain, the sea is calmer and with greater visibility, between 20 and 30 meters.

We traveled in December but we were lucky and it didn't rain all week. The negative part is that the visibility for both snorkeling and diving was not good at all.
How many days are needed
If you have come to this remote region of Malaysia, it is probably because you are going to dive or because you have time to travel and you like to visit lesser-known places. We recommend a minimum of 4 days if you want to dive, so you can do a tour from Semporna and dive 2 or 3 days of diving in Mabul or Sipadan. And 2 or 3 days if you only do tours from Semporna.
Where to eat in Semporna
As in the rest of the country, Semporna's restaurants are a mix of culinary cultures. Particularly noteworthy are the Chinese restaurants due to the large number of tourists from that country who visit the place although Indian and Malaysian food restaurants are the cheapest.
In Semporna there is a small street by the sea full of restaurants dedicated to fish and seafood. This street is in front of the Dragon Inn floating hotel. Although I love seafood, the price of the dishes was beyond my backpacking budget.
We opted for fast food restaurants most days. Indian-Muslim or Malay. We tried many of the restaurants around the Perfect Hub hotel where we were staying being the restaurant Al-Farisha and their delicious rotis, our favorite, and it was also open 24 hours.

We personally didn't use the drone in the national park, although I don't remember exactly if it was because it was prohibited or if we simply didn't bring it on the tour. The drone photos in the article were taken on Mabul Island. They're usually not very restrictive about drones except near airports or military areas, but it's best to ask the tour company you're booking with.

Semporna is not the best place in Malaysia because it has been a relatively troubled place with a large Bajau (sea gypsy) community. But that does not mean that it is a very touristy area and quite quiet for tourism (mostly Chinese). There are a large number of hotels and restaurants and the tourist offer revolves around tours to the islands in the area.
The city doesn't have much to see and can seem dirty by Western standards. We were there for 2 days and I don't remember it as anything extreme. As I said, most of your time will be spent on excursions and there is little to see in the city so it shouldn't be a problem.
