How to visit Vestrahorn and Stokksnes Beach
There are places in Iceland that seem to be from another planet, and this is one of them. Vestrahorn, with its sharp mountains reflected on the black sand of Stokksnes, is one of the most photogenic landscapes in the country. In addition, here you will find a curious Viking settlement in Iceland, created as a film set, and trails to explore the coast.

Where is Vestrahorn and how to get there
The only way to visit Vestrahorn and Stokksnes Beach It's free, either with rental car or van camperAccess is easy and well signposted. It's a perfect stop to visit early or late in the day if you're staying in the village. It is located about 6 hours (462 km) from Reykjavik so There are no tours to reach Vestrahorn. This iconic mountain, which seems to merge with the sea, is a popular stop after visiting the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. From there, it will take 1 hour and 15 minutes.
To get there you have to follow the Ring Road to the east, and shortly before reaching a tunnel, you will see a detour on the right towards the Viking CafeYou can buscar on Google Maps as Viking Café Stokksnes o Stokksnes Parking.
Vestrahorn price and how access works
Vestrahorn and Stokksnes Beach are one of the few privately owned and entrance-paid spots in Iceland. It's managed by the Viking Café, so you'll have to pay an entrance fee to get in. 900 ISK per person (about €6), which gives access to the entire area: the beach, the Viking village, the dunes and the marked trails.
You can pay at the interior of the Viking Café during opening hours or, if you arrive outside of opening hours, at the automatic machine which is next to the parking lot.
You'll need to scan the ticket you receive when you pay at the barrier to gain entry by vehicle. Keep in mind that even if you're walking, you still have to pay to enter.
🚐 In case of sleeping in the Vestrahorn Campsite (from the Viking Café) admission is free, is included in the 2.500 ISK camping fee.
What to see in Vestrahorn (and Stokksnes)
Visiting Vestrahorn It's not just a quick photo stop. You'll have a great time exploring the area, different angles of the beach, the black dunes, the Viking movie set, and there are even several hiking trails.
Views of Vestrahorn
As soon as you pass the access control, a dirt track takes you to an elevated viewpoint with stunning views of VestrahornIt's one of the country's most famous postcards, and I'm not surprised because on a sunny day it's spectacular, especially when someone's walking along the beach and it serves as a reference point to understand the magnitude of Vestrahorn Mountain.
From that point you can walk down to the beachAt high tide or after it has been high you can find an almost perfect reflection.
Stokksnes Beach and Black Dunes
Stokksnes beach is made of dark volcanic sand, surrounded by black dunes covered with grassa very carcharacteristic of this area. You can walk freely among them, always taking care not to damage the vegetation. A very curious thing is that in winter it gets so cold that the dunes freeze and become completely hard.
Viking Village
On the left side of the main road, you will see the access to a Viking settlement Built as a film set. Although the film was never shot, the set remained and can be visited. It consists of several wooden houses, stone walls, and interesting details. Although it's not very large, it's worth spending a few minutes there.
Trails along Vestrahorn
Upon entering Vestrahorn, you will receive a map with several hiking trails, the two most popular and accessible routes are the red route and yellow route.
- 🔴 Red Route – Coastal Walk. 5k – 1h30 minutes. It runs along the western shore of Kirkjusandur Beach and offers the chance to see seals and many birds in summer.
- 🟡 Yellow Route – Beach and Viking Village. 5k – 1h30 minutes. It runs along the beach to the village, covering the entire Stokksnes area at low tide.
Fauna to see in Vestrahorn
Vestrahorn is also an interesting place to observe wildlife. Vestrahorn is impressive at any time of day, but if you want to capture a picture-postcard image, there are several important factors to consider.
- The ideal light is at sunrise or sunsetThe mountain turns orange on clear days and is a true marvel.
- The best time to see the reflection of Vestrahorn on Stokksnes beach is during high tide, and windless days, something quite difficult to achieve in Iceland. You can check here the tide.
- If there low clouds or fogIt's very likely you won't see any of the landscape. If that's the case, we wouldn't recommend visiting, because all you'll really see is a black beach, as you've probably seen in Reynisfjara or other places in the south.
If you travel in the summer you may also find several points from which to photograph the mountain with the iconic lilac flowers, this is one of the best places to see lupine in Iceland.
Entonces Is Vestrahorn worth visiting?
Yes, definitely. Vestrahorn is one of Iceland's most photogenic landscapes, with a dramatic air that's hard to forget and a magnitude that you can't fully grasp until you're there. Seeing how it meets the sea is amazing.. Also, being such a large place (and not accessible by day tours) you will hardly find crowds.
Don't worry if you can't see it at high tide, or if the weather isn't that great. In fact, one of the times we went it was quite cloudy, and within 15 minutes the sky cleared up. Iceland is totally unpredictable!
