Day to day: Iceland Route in 14 Days
Day 1: Arrival in Keflavik, Reykjanes & Reykjavík
- Distance 50-100km
- (I.e.Guesthouse Pavi
- Reykjavík Campsite
Depending on the time your flight arrives, you can make the most of the day. If you arrive early in the morning, it's best to stay somewhere hotel near Keflavik Airport and start the route the next day. If you arrive in the morning or midday, this is what we would do to get a taste of everything there is to see in Iceland in 14 days.
We would start by visiting some places in the Reykjanes Peninsula, the place with the most volcanic activity of the country Where the last eruptions have been! And it's right where the Airport is, so perfect. A few kilometers from the airport there is also the very famous Blue Lagoon In case you want to start by treating yourself. Remember, Book Now with time.
You can spend the first night in Reykjavik and take a nighttime stroll through the city center, which is usually lively.

Day 2: Snaefellsnes Peninsula
- Distance 350km
- (I.e.Dalakot Hotel
- 🚐Búðardalur Camping
We started driving north along the Ring Road, towards snaefellsnes peninsula, one of the most scenic places in the country.
Shortly after taking the turn towards Snaefellsnes, the carretera 55, which leads to one of our favorite places on the peninsula. These are the coordinates 64.842896, -22.236739 that leave you in an intense red lava field whose location is not on Google.
Very close I also recommend stopping at the Gerðuberg cliffs to have your first contact with the hexagonal basalt columns.
We continue the second day of this 14-day route through Iceland exploring some of the classics of the peninsula such as the Ytri Tunga beach, where it is common to see seals, the Raudfeldsgja Gorge o the coastal cliffs of Arnarstapi with its famous natural stone arch.

You can't miss the Kirkjufell mountain, reflected in a small lake there or in the sea if you are lucky, like from the perspective of the waterfall Kirkjufellfoss.
If you want to save a few miles of driving, head to Stykkishólmsbær, a fishing village from where the ferry to the Westfjords departs. You can read more information in our post about the west fjords.
Complete Guide to what to do in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.

If you prefer to do everything by carRetera, on this second day, the best thing to do to sleep is... advance a few kilometers towards Westfjords (westfjords) and sleep in the Búðardalur campsite or Dalakot Hotel.
Day 3: Westfjords
- Distance 300km
- (I.e.Breidavik Guesthouse
- 🚐Camping Breidavik
On this first day of the route through the Westfjords we leave early and head west. It's going to be two days of many kilometers. carreteras that are not in perfect condition, but with landscapes that are a spectacle as you go along the fjords. After about 100 kilometers we enter the westfjords bordering some like Skalmarfjordur.
Near the port of Brjánslaekur (where the ferry arrives) there are free hot springs where you can take a dip and relax for a while. Explore free hot springs through the west fjords is one of the best things you can do on a 14-day route through Iceland.

You can't get lost either Rauðisandur, A wild beach with over 10 kilometers of golden sand, where it's common to spot dolphins and whales, as well as seals on the sand. Along the way, you'll pass Gardar BA 64, a stranded whaling ship from 1912.

The last stop is the Látrabjarg Cliffs, the westernmost point of Iceland and the highest in the country at up to 440 meters. To sleep, I recommend going back to Breidavik and stay at their campsite or hotel, has a good common room and kitchen.

Day 4: Westfjords, our favorite thing to see in Iceland in 14 days
- Distance 420km
- (I.e.Hotel Laugarhól
- 🚐Hólmavik Camping
This is another day where you'll continue to be amazed and excited by the landscapes that appear as you drive. On the fourth day, you'll encounter more natural hot springs and (in my opinion) the waterfall most spectacular in Iceland, although not the only one since this area of the country is full of "small" waterfalls in the mountains.
To start the day I recommend stopping at Tálknafjörður, a small fishing village with a shop «self-service» of fresh fish, we bought trout there for lunch. After the town, the views of the fjord from a small beach are also wonderful.

A few kilometers further on you will find at foot of carThe Fossfjörður waterfall and one of the free hot springs with best views in Iceland, Reykjafjarðarlaug Hot Pool.
It is the turn of Dynjandi, one of the most anticipated moments of any route through the West Fjords and of course of this 14-day Iceland route.
When you visit Dynjandi from the parking lot, if you look to one side you will have views of the Arnarfjördur fjord and on the opposite side a path that borders 7 waterfalls until you reach the jewel in the crown, Dynjandi, with its 100 meters high and 60 meters wide creating a perfect sheet of water.
Everything you tell yourself about her falls short, the immensity of this waterfall and what you feel when you arrive has to be experienced.

In the Dynjandi parking lot there are picnic tables, it can be an ideal place to eat before continuing the route towards Ísafjörður, the capital of the Westfjords. Although it is really a charming fishing village at the foot of a fjord, on the way you can stop at the pier Önundarfjörður pierBy the way, take advantage of the fact that there are several supermarkets in Ísafjörður to buy supplies.

It is quite a few kilometres, but the ideal would be to advance at least to the Reykjanes tjaldsvæði campsite (very close to the free hot springs of Hörgshlíðarlaug) or to the Hólmavík campsite.
Day 5: North Iceland
- Distance 400km
- (I.e.Akureyri Hostel
- 🚐Camping Hamrar
It is time to get to know the northern coast until you spend the night in Akureyri. Some stops you can't miss are the rock of Hvitserkur along with the nearby beaches to try to spot seals. The Kolugljúfur canyon with the waterfall that falls in between or the waterfall and hot spring of Fosslaug.
On Eyjafjörður fjord, the longest in Iceland and the most beautiful in the north, you can choose to cross it through a beautiful mountain pass or go around it (adding 70km to the route) stopping in some small fishing villages such as Siglufjörður or Dalvík.
Once in Akureyri you can take advantage of the opportunity to relax by taking a dip in Forest Lagoon or visiting a hidden thermal pool and free.

Day 6: Whale watching and Myvatn
- Distance 170km
- (I.e.Hlíd Hostel
- 🚐Vogar Camping
One of the best activities you can do in Iceland is sailing through a fjord trying to spot whalesThis is exactly how I suggest you start day 6 of this 14-day Iceland itinerary. The small village of Hauganes, just 25 minutes from Akureyri, is our favorite spot for whale watching, with two to three trips a day during peak season.
→ Book Now tour in Hauganes
If quiet times don't suit you, the north is the best place in Iceland to watch whales and you will have more opportunities to do so as in the Húsavik town.
Guide to sight whales in iceland, all the information you need to know and what kind of whales you can see.

We continue exploring the north, with a short stop at the waterfall at the foot of carretera Godafoss. A few kilometers later we will enter lThe area with the most geothermal activity in Iceland, Myvant. There you will find the steaming, stinking, impossible-colored field of Hverir, undoubtedly the most famous place in northern Iceland. But in this area there are many other impressive places that are a must-see on a 14-day Iceland itinerary, such as the Grjótagjá cave or Hverfjall ash volcano.
On map At the beginning of the article you have the entire route marked and in this article about what to do in Myvant and surroundings You can read about them and why this area has so much volcanic activity.

Day 7: Dettifoss and East Iceland
- Distance 300km
- (I.e.Tehusid Hostel
- 🚐Camping Egilsstadir
We reached the equator of what to see in Iceland in 14 days, start by visiting the largest waterfall in Europe. Dettifoss can be accessed from the east or west side, we have an article where we tell you the differences and you can see a photo from both (Although it will be difficult to choose!)
→ Dettifoss east or west bank?
You can't miss the neighboring waterfall Selfoss before heading east on the Ring Road. The first 120 kilometers are desolate, yet breathtaking, a carA nearly straight road with volcanic landscape to the right and left. On the way to Egilsstadir, the eastern capital, lies Studlagil, the basalt column canyon and the Rjúkandafoss waterfall.

Follow the carRoute 1 to reach Egilsstadir, where I recommend staying tonight. I'll dedicate the rest of the day to...carI was going to do the carback road that goes up to the town de Seydisfjordur, walk through it and take a short route to the Vestdalfossar waterfalls.

If you prefer to spend the afternoon visiting an uninhabited and wild fjord, one of the places I recommend is Mjóifjörður, the most beautiful fjord in the east. One of my favorite landscapes in Iceland.

If you have a good budget End the day with a bath at Vök Baths It is the best of plans. Buy the ticket at Get Your Guide since it is somewhat cheaper than at reception.
Day 8: Eastfjords and hiking
- Distance 360km
- (I.e.Guesthouse Hammersminni
- 🚐Djúpivogur Camping Ground
In eastern Iceland, the greatest charm lies in the landscapes you encounter as you skirt the different fjords that form its terrain, but there are other places worth visiting. I suggest several for this eighth day of the route.
In the east of Iceland is one of the puffin colonies Easier to see. Borgarfjardarhöfn is their home from late May to late August. If you want to see them up close, you can't miss this spot. And of course, the scenery leading up to it includes a spectacular fjord.
Then we head towards the highlands (an area where 4×4 is not necessary) to do our Iceland's favorite hiking trail, Circle of the CascadesIt starts at the Laugarfell mountain hotel and is about 8km long, but between stops and photos, it takes a while to complete.
On the way there you will see the waterfall in the distance. Hengifoss, which is also another hiking option in the area. If I had to choose one I would do the circle of waterfalls, but if you choose Hengifoss it will not disappoint you either.

Guide East Iceland, some of the most beautiful and unknown landscapes in the country.
Late in the afternoon we said goodbye to the east, heading towards Djúpivogur, the last town in the eastern fjords. To get there you can choose to shorten the route slightly via the Öxi Pass (carRoute 95), an unpaved road that crosses a fjord or skirts the fjords by the carRoute 1, a longer and more scenic option that takes you through three fjords.

Day 9: Glacial lagoons, one of the best things to see in Iceland in 14 days
- Distance 225km
- (I.e.Hvoll Hostel
- 🚐Svínafelli Campsite
Already entering the south, the first stop of the day will be a black sand beach with a giant rock formation, Vestrahorn.

After another hour of driving we arrived at one of the most famous and spectacular places to see in Iceland in 14 days, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach, a beach that, living up to its name, usually has pieces of ice on its shore.
Very close there is another glacial lagoon, Fjallsárlón, although less famous you can't miss it either and if not look at the photo I leave you of this site. We like it a lot because the glacier tongue can be seen closer.

Surely these three places will "steal" a lot of your time because it is enough to spend hours looking at them, especially if you have never seen glaciers and icebergs as was our case the first time we went.
But save time and energy for a small hiking route to Múlagljúfur, a velvety green canyon with two waterfalls, a beautiful place. For us a must What to see in Iceland in 14 days.

Day 10: Skaftafell National Park
- Distance 50km
- (I.e.Hvoll Hostel
- 🚐Svínafelli Campsite
The tenth day of this 14-day Icelandic itinerary is dedicated to ice. If you were already amazed yesterday, the scenery is just as impressive today.
I suggest you go trekking along the glacier, This is our favoriteWe have an article comparing the different glacier treks so you can choose the one that suits you best.

Around midday you will finish the activity and in the afternoon you can take the opportunity to take a short hiking route through the National Park itself. I recommend you either take a route that goes to Svartifoss waterfall which inspired the design of Reykjavik Cathedral, or the one leading to the Sjónarnípa viewpoint, where you'll have privileged views of the glacier tongue. Taking it easy and including stops, it'll take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete one of them, and about 2 to 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete both.

Day 11: Thakgil, an incredible place to see in Iceland in 14 days
- Distance 140km
- (I.e.the barn
- 🚐Þakgil Camping
We start the day on the way to one of the little visited jewels of Iceland but with a few brief stops en route to see the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, the moss fields of Eldhraun and Gígjagjá, nicknamed Baby Yoda's cave.

These are stops where I don't think you'll spend much time, so around midday you'll arrive at the carback road that goes into the highlands in the direction of Thakgil (Þakgil), the starting point for spectacular hiking trails. In our Thakgil guide We tell you the different options depending on distance and difficulty, you can also read our experience doing the yellow trail.
DedicarI spent the whole afternoon hiking there, and if you're traveling by van or tent, sleeping there is the best plan. Otherwise, it's best to backtrack and sleep in Vík. There are also bungalows at the Thakgil campsite that you can book by sending an email.

Are you traveling to Iceland during the Aurora season? Northern Iceland is the best area to see them. We've written a guide with everything you need to know to see Auroras.
Day 12: Black beach and waterfalls, the most popular thing to see in Iceland
- Distance 150km
- (I.e.BSG Apartment
- 🚐Camping Úlfljótsvatn
The 12th will be to visit some of the most famous places in Iceland as we travel through the south. The first stop is the black beach of Reynisfjara with its hypnotic basalt columns, cliffs and rocks that look like something out of a movie in the middle of the sea.
From there you can see the cliffs of Dyrholaey, home to puffins in summer, and from which there are unparalleled views of the infinity of the black beach, so I recommend that after the beach these are your next stop.

These days you will have already realized that if there is something that is not lacking in Iceland, it is water, so it is once again the turn to visit waterfalls.
I recommend you stop at Kvernufoss, Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Gljufrafoss and Gluggafoss. If you travel with a 4×4 vehicle you can also take a look at visiting Haifoss and Nauthúsafoss. As always, as you go and as you see how your time goes, rush is never good.

Day 13: Golden Circle
- Distance 125km
- (I.e.Héradsskólinn Historic Guesthouse
- Reykholt Campsite
El Reyjadalur thermal river It's one of the best things to see and do in South Iceland. It's located 3 kilometers from the parking lot with a slight incline. Once you get there, the higher you go, the warmer the water is. The site is quite well-known, so If you can go early you will find fewer people. and your natural bath will be more relaxing. We leave you a guide how to get to the thermal river.

After the swim we head to the Golden Circle, the most touristy area of Iceland due to its proximity to Reykjavík, but it undoubtedly has several places of interest that are worth adding to your itinerary.
You can start by eating at a very original place, Fridheimar, a tomato greenhouse which houses a restaurant inside. Of course, their specialty is tomatoes in all kinds of forms, especially in soup.
18 Recommended restaurants in Iceland ✅ (At a good price!)
In the afternoon, I recommend visiting Gullfoss waterfall, the Strokkur geyser, and the turquoise Brúarárfoss waterfall. Then, sleep in the area and the next day, finish off the most interesting places in the Golden Circle. I recommend reading our guide. guide to the Golden Circle.

Day 14: Reykjavík and return home
- Distance 120km
On the last day of the 14-day Iceland itinerary you can visit Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir) where you can walk between the tectonic plates North American and Eurasian. A place that is also cardegree of history because it was established first parliament in the world 930 the year.
If you're not flying on the 14th, I recommend taking a more relaxed day in the south, like visiting the waterfalls and black sand beach. And that way, you can dedicate the 14th to...carI complete the golden circle. Another alternative is add an extra day to the westfjords area, to travel it in 3 days and do fewer kilometers per day.
Before going to Keflavik (International Airport) you can Take advantage to get to know Reykjavik a little. Personally, I don't think it's essential because the best of Iceland is outside the urban centers, but since we're close, a stroll wouldn't hurt.
Reykjavik has plenty of leisure time and a very good atmosphere, a city full of art galleries and street art that you can explore in a couple of hours walking, as is done in all European cities. free tours to know its history and corners.

EXTRA Day 15: The highlands, Landmannalaugar
Do you have 15 days in Iceland? Well, make a note of it. I recommend you do it. a highlands excursion from Reykjavík (Remember that this area is only accessible by 4×4).
This hiking tour in Landmannalaugar, which you might not recognize from the name, but I'm sure you've seen it in photos. Landmannalaugar is a geologically incredible area with "rainbow" mountains due to the effects of various minerals.
Getting there is an adventure between rivers and dusty roads, and once in Landmannalaugar there is a walking route through different places such as the Ljótipollur crater or the volcanic lake Hnausapollur. In addition, a bath in natural hot springs in the middle of this landscape.
I hope this 14-day mega route through Iceland has given you ideas and helped you plan your trip to the land of ice and fire. We invite you to read other Guides for traveling to Iceland.
