Where the route begins and how to get to the crashed Requesens plane

The walking route begins at Requesens neighborhood in which there are only a couple of houses and an organic farm. To get to Requesens we must first go to the town of Cantallops and take a dirt track In good condition, but it takes quite a long time, about 20 minutes. Of course, from this track the views are spectacular, you can see the entire Empordà plain and the Gulf of Roses.

When you've been on the track for a while you will find a fence that blocks the way, it is only for cattle, so no problem, open it to pass and don't forget to close it afterwards.

In these last kilometers the track goes through the forest until it reaches Requesens. You will see a detour in which you can cross the river towards the Requesens Castle or go up a little further to the beginning of the route.

During the remainder of the journey you will find different parking spotsRight at the end there are quite a few places so it is best to try to see if they are free, and if there are bad ones, go back. Don't worry if you see cars far below, remember that many other routes start from there.

Step by step route

Next to the last parking lot there is a fence delimiting the entrance to the “town.” Have You have to cross it and turn right, where you will see a little path up., that is the exact starting point.

The route is not difficult or lost, in fact, if you search for the name of the plane on Google Maps “Douglas DC6” airplane the exact point will appear. If you prefer to play it safe you can always use the wikiloc track.

As I said before, the route is along a track in good condition with beautiful views of the entire area. Empordà and the Gulf of Roses.

After walking about 4km you will see on the left a large rock with a commemorative plaque in honor of the plane crew. About 20 meters ahead you will begin to see the remains between the trees. If you don't find it, look for a couple of small paths that deviate, you can't get lost.

Just turn around and you will see the crashed plane of Requesens, standing there among the vegetation, traditional worthy of a movie setting or the Lost series than real life.

Be amazed by this setting, visit the interior, climb to the top to see the remains (almost non-existent) of the cabin and don't stop investigating the surroundings, there are some scattered pieces! The truth is, it is something very curious to see that may not exist in a few years.

Afterwards you will only have retrace your steps, this time with a slight slope, and in an hour you will be in the car.

If you look for Requesens on the map you will see that it is very close to the French border. If you decide to cross it I recommend you visit the Gorges de la Carança.

Tips to enjoy the route to the Requesens crashed plane

The route is short and easy, but with a fair sun. Note that there is practically no shadow. We went in May and it was very hot, so don't forget good footwear, hat, sunscreen and water.

Be careful with the time, keep in mind that the dirt track is long and that with a normal car you have to be attentive. So avoid going down without light.

If you would like to be alone on a plane You see some weekday afternoon or midday. On a Friday at noon we didn't meet anyone.

If you are scared, you should know that the plane makes a very scary noise. ?? Don't worry, it's not a ghost, just the rear rudder moving through the air. At night this should not make even a spark of grace...

Visit to the Requesens castle

When you take the road back to Cantallops you will see again the crossroads that leads to Requesens Castle crossing the stream.

It is a huge castle from the mid-9th century with a long and curious history, so much so that Salvador Dalí was on the verge of destroying it.

We were not able to visit it, but from the photos and historical level I think it is very worth it. If you have time and feel like it Admission with guided tour costs €7 . But the time slots are very limited, it is best to call and arrange it,  Here you have the link to their page.

  1. Hello! What a great and well-explained article. I want to visit this June, but on a motorcycle. Do you know if I can or is it prohibited to use vehicles? Thanks, and keep it up!

    1. Hi Mario!! Well, we know there's one carIt's an unpaved road that goes right up to the plane, but I don't know what permits or regulations are needed to ride a motorcycle there.

I'm sorry I can't give you more information.

      All the best
