What to see on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland
Many travelers arrive in Iceland, land in Keflavík, pick up the rental car and cross the reykjanes peninsula without stopping, thinking there isn't much to see in this area. And yet, here lies one of our favorite places in the country: the Fagradalsfjall volcano, where the most recent eruptions have created a film-like landscape.
This wild and volcanic peninsula is a little-known gem packed with fumaroles, lava fields, cliffs, lighthouses and geothermal watersAn ideal area to explore on your own in the afternoon or morning.
In this guide we tell you What to see in Reykjanes and why we believe it cannot be missing in your Iceland itinerary.
Better places to see in Reykjanes
1. Fagradalsfjall and its recent lava fields
One of the most striking landscapes of the entire Reykjanes Peninsula is the one left by the recent volcanic eruptions in the zone of fagradalsfjall, since 2021 there have already been several and today it has become a huge lava field, where you can still see steam rising from the ground and where the shapes, textures and colors of the newly created rock seem from another planet.

In 2022 we went to Fagradalsfjall for the first time and in August 2023 We were lucky enough to witness one of the eruptions, and it was one of the most brutal experiences we've had in Iceland.
To see the laundry you have to go to one of the enabled parking lots (this is the closest). The trail starts at the same parking lot and is well marked, it takes about 20 minute walk until the beginning of the wash and once there you can walk around the area as long as you want.

2. The Krysuvík geothermal area
If you are interested in seeing geothermal landscapes with bubbling mud, yellow and orange colors, steam rising from the ground and that unmistakable smell of sulfur, Krysuvík It is a highly recommended stop.
This place It is quite reminiscent of HverirNear Myvant, the most famous geothermal area in northern Iceland, albeit in a smaller version. That's why we highly recommend it. if you are just going to tour the south iceland, since if you plan to go north, very similar landscapes await you there.
Hay wooden walkways which allow you to walk among fumaroles and steaming mud pools. It's right next to the carso it will be a brief stop.

3. Gunnuhver, another geothermal stop
Gunnuhver is another geothermal area in Reykjanes where steam erupts under pressure from the ground, forming a gigantic white cloud. It is ideal for a quick stop on the way to the next place we recommend you visit.
Furthermore, its name comes from an ancient local legend about a woman named Gunna, whose spirit is said to remain trapped in the steam pit.
4. Reykjanesviti and the Valahnúkamöl cliffs
Very close to Gunnuhver is Reykjanesviti, the oldest lighthouse in IcelandAlthough the current building is from the 1878th century, the original structure dates back to XNUMX, and still guides ships along this wild coastline today.
The best thing is not only the lighthouse itself, but the environment that surrounds it: the Valahnúkamöl cliffs, an area where the sea crashes forcefully against the black lava formations, creating a stunning landscape. There are several marked trails that take you to the edge of the cliffs, and on clear days the views are spectacular.
Also, if you like bird watching, this area is very good for viewing. seabird colonies nesting on the cliffs during the summer.

5. The bridge between continents
One of the most curious places on the Reykjanes Peninsula is the bridge between continents (Bru Milli Heimsálfa (in Icelandic). This small metal bridge crosses a rift that separates the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which means you can literally walk from one continent to another in a few seconds.
It's a quick and different stop, to better understand why Iceland is so unique geologically speaking. Other places in Iceland where you can see the crack that separates the plates are in Grjótagja Cave in the north or Thingvellir in the golden circle.

6. Blue Lagoon, the most famous thermal baths
Blue Lagoon or Laguna Azul are the most iconic hot springs in the country and undoubtedly one of the best hot springs in iceland. Being located between lava fields and its intense blue color have become one of the most recognizable images of Iceland.
It's very close to Keflavík Airport, so many people take advantage of the opportunity to visit it just before their return flight. It is very important that you book in advance because it fills up easily.
Now, it is not a cheap experience at all, and although the place is beautiful, We would not consider it essential either., since in Iceland there are other hot springs that are also incredible and cheaper (or even free!) so for those who don't want to spend so much in Iceland Going to the Blue Lagoon would not be something we would recommend doing in Reykjanes.

An important detail is that due to the volcanic risk in the areaBlue Lagoon has had to close several times over the past few years, so it may not be operational during your visit.
